Unlock iPhone 4.3.2 with UltraSn0w

Thanks to the hard work of the iPhone Dev Team, the UltraSn0w unlock for iPhone has been updated to play well with iOS 4.3.3. As mentioned in our previous post about UltraSn0w, this will only work with iPhone 4 baseband 1.59.00, and iPhone 3G/3GS basebands 4.26.08, 5.11.07, 5.12.01, 5.13.04, and 6.15.00.
If your baseband is different from these, then you can’t unlock for the time being. If your baseband matches one of those above but you are on an older firmware, use PwnageTool to update while preserving the baseband.
In this tutorial, we will show you how to unlock your iPhone 4.3.3 using UltraSn0w…
Step 1: Make sure your baseband matches any of the basebands listed above. If it doesn’t, you can’t unlock. If it does, you may update your iPhone to 4.3.3 while preserving the baseband using PwnageTool. Note that you don’t have to update to 4.3.3. If for example you are still on iOS 4.1, you may stay there and still use UltraSn0w.
Step 2: Make sure your iPhone is jailbroken. The easiest way is to use RedSn0w, although it can be tricky as you might accidentally update your baseband. Which is why I suggest you use PwnageTool instead. PwnageTool will not update your baseband.
Step 3: After jailbreaking, go to Cydia and search for “UltraSn0w”. Download and install the app, then reboot your iPhone.
That’s it. Your iPhone should now be unlocked.

How to Unlock iOS 5.0.1 With UltraSn0w

UltraSn0w 1.2.5 was just released with iOS 5.0.1 support in tow for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. So, how do you make it work?
Inside, you’ll find a brief tutorial that shows you how to verify if you qualify for an unlock, and how to go about unlocking your iPhone with UltraSn0w 1.2.5…
Step 1: Make sure you have a qualifying baseband.
To check this go to Settings > General > About and check the “Modem Firmware” section at the bottom of the page. If you are on an iPhone 4 and the Modem Firmware says 01.59.00, you can unlock. If you are on an iPhone 3GS and your firmware is any of the following: 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, or 06.15.00 you can unlock.
If your baseband doesn’t meet the above requirements, stop here. You are not eligible for unlock. iPhone 4S is currently not unlockable.
Step 2: If you haven’t already, upgrade to iOS 5.0.1 and preserve your baseband when doing so.
Step 3: Jailbreak your iPhone 5.0.1.
Step 4: Go to Cydia and search for “UltraSn0w”. Install UltraSn0w 1.2.5.
Step 5: Remove your old SIM card and replace with new SIM card e.g. a T-Mobile SIM. You may need to cut your SIM to fit the micro-SIM slot. See the video for more details.
Step 6: Give your iPhone a few seconds, and it should now be on the new network, courtesy of the UltraSn0w 1.2.5 iOS 5.0.1 unlock.
Unless you got an iPhone 4 at launch and you were very careful to preserve it all of this time, it’s fairly unlikely that your baseband still qualifies. I know mine doesn’t.

Ultrasn0w updated for iOS 6.1

ultrasn0w 1.2.8
Between the rise of third party vendors and the recent change in DMCA policy, the need for iPhone software unlocks is steadily dwindling. But that doesn’t mean that the method is obsolete, as there are still many people out there with older iPhones.
And if you happen to be one of those people, you’ll be happy to know that MuscleNerd has confirmed that Ultrasn0w was quietly updated this week to support iOS 6.1. So if you’re on an eligible device and baseband, you can unlock on the new firmware…
As MuscleNerd says, Ultrasn0w 1.2.8 works with 6.1 and is already out in Cydia. You just need make sure that you have either: an iPhone 4 on baseband 01.59.00, or an iPhone 3G/3GS on basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 0.5.12.01, 05.13.04 or 06.15.00.
Remember you can check your iPhone’s baseband by opening Settings > General > About > Modem Firmware.
If you’re on one of these firmwares, you’ll have to make sure that you don’t update your baseband when you update to iOS 6.1. To do this, you can use RedSn0w, just open the app and click Extras > Even More > Restore and choose not to upgrade BB.
Now if you really want to make your life easier, we can only suggest using an official factory unlock such as ChronicUnlocks.

The Difference Between Jailbreaking and Unlocking

There is a lot of confusion among noobies about jailbreaking and unlocking. One of our readers recently asked for a clear “non geeky” definition of both terms.

If you already know the difference between jailbreaking and unlocking, this article might not be very helpful to you but you may still be able to give us some insights or maybe add your comments and suggestions. If you don’t know what jailbreaking or unlocking means, then read on because you’re just about to get a crash course on iPhone hacking…

What is Jailbreaking?

Definition of Jailbreaking
Jailbreaking is the process by which an iPhone firmware is modified to allow unsigned code to be run to gain access to files that Apple wouldn’t normally let you access. Jailbreaking adds unofficial application installers to your iPhone such as Cydia or Icy (I personally only use Cydia), which let you download many 3rd-party applications previously unavailable through the App Store.
Is Jailbreaking Legal?
Update: Jailbreaking is now officially legal in the US
Yes and no. The legality of jailbreaking is very unclear. Most iPhone owners including myself think that since we own the iPhone, we should be able to do whatever we want with it.
Apple’s lawyers think differently as they consider jailbreaking to be a violation of copyright. I had a phone conversation with Apple’s copyright attorney about a year ago and he admitted to me that they are not capable of going after every jailbreaker out there… To these days, I don’t think anyone has had legal issues with Apple due to jailbreaking.
Why Jailbreak Your iPhone

Jailbreaking lets you install applications that are not approved by Apple. Many of these applications can be very helpful but they will unfortunately never make it to the App Store due to Apple’s restrictions. There are many reasons why you would want to jailbreak your iPhone:
  • install 3rd party applications rejected by Apple for various reasons (ie. nudity)
  • video recording (now available on the iPhone 3GS)
  • changing the look and feel by installing custom graphics and themes
  • free tethering
  • get access to cracked App Store apps for free (not endorsed by me, but still worth noting)
  • be able to unlock your iPhone
Why Not Jailbreak Your iPhone

I can only think of one reason why you wouldn’t want to jailbreak. Jailbreaking your iPhone automatically voids the warranty. This is not really a problem as you can always restore your iPhone in iTunes, putting it back to its factory settings. This will make it impossible for Apple to see you jailbroke your iPhone, thus not voiding your warranty.
In the past, some jailbreak methods were not very stable and sometimes turned your iPhone into an iBrick aka an expensive paper weight. Jailbreak methods are now very stable and I have yet to hear about someone bricking his iPhone while jailbreaking. In other words, jailbreaking is safe!
How Do I Jailbreak My iPhone?
I wrote many tutorials on how to jailbreak your iPhone, depending on what iPhone and what firmware you have. Check them out, follow the instructions, and have fun. You don’t need to have a PhD in computer science to jailbreak your iPhone. It’s very simple and straightforward. If you can download 2 files and click “next” when prompted, then you can jailbreak your iPhone.
What If Something Goes Wrong?
It’s very unlikely that something will go wrong… If you have a problem, simply plug your iPhone to your computer, launch iTunes, and click “restore”. As I mentioned above, it will restore your iPhone to factory settings.
Why Are You Still Reading This?
What? You’re still aren’t sure about this whole jailbreak thing? You’re missing out big time. An unjailbroken iPhone is a plain boring iPhone! Jailbreaking is the best thing that has happened to my iPhone and I seriously can’t live without it.

What Is Unlocking?

Definition of Unlocking
Unlocking is the removal of SIM restrictions on the modem, allowing the use of the iPhone on any carrier. There are 2 types of iPhone unlocks:
  • software unlock: the iPhone is unlocked by a software
  • hardware unlock: modification have to be made to the actual hardware to unlock the phone
Software unlocks are safer because they do not modify your device and can easily be reverted back. Soft unlocks are mostly developed for free by the Dev Team, an international group of iPhone hackers. Hardware unlocks are a little tricky and usually cost money. In clear, if you want to unlock your iPhone, you can do it for free by with a safe software unlock.
Is Unlocking Legal?
According to Wikipedia, “unlocking a phone without the permission or unlocking code from the provider is usually in breach of the agreement with the provider, though most countries do not make specific laws prohibiting the removal of SIM locks. In the United States the DMCA formerly was claimed to criminalize unlocking. However, an exemption that took effect 27 November 2006 specifically permits it.”
Why Unlock Your iPhone
The main reason to unlock your iPhone is if you want to use it with a different service provider (ie T-Mobile). An unlocked iPhone also has a better resell value.
Why Not Unlock Your iPhone
If you’re good with your phone carrier and will not use your iPhone internationally, there is absolutely no reason for you to unlock your iPhone.
How Do I Unlock My iPhone?
Before unlocking your iPhone, you will have to jailbreak it. The unlock can either be done from a computer, or directly from the iPhone. Check out my iPhone unlock tutorials for step by step instructions.
What If Something Goes Wrong?
Although unlocks can sometimes mess up your settings a little bit, they are constantly improved to fix errors and bugs. If something goes wrong, you can always restore your iPhone to factory settings.

In Short…

I case you’re still not really sure you understand the difference between jailbreaking and unlocking, let me put it in very simple words. Jailbreaking an iPhone means that 3rd party applications can be installed on it (ie. apps from other developers than Apple). Unlocking an iPhone means that any SIM card can be used on it.

What Is Unlocking?

Unlocking is an extremely easy concept to explain, sort of . Unless stated otherwise, cell phones purchased from carrier retail stores are “locked” to that specific carrier. For instance, a Blackberry storm from Verizon won’t work on an AT&T calling plan. The Sprint Palm Pre won’t work on T-mobile. Even your iPhone from AT&T is “locked” to that infamous blue-mapped carrier.

So what do you do if you want to purchase a phone you like but use it with a different carrier, perhaps one that costs less or gets better reception in your area? For most folks I’d say ” eh fa-gettaboutit ! ” (in a pretty sweet Brooklyn/Italian accent might I add). But for those of you lucky enough to have apples on the back of your phones, there are ways to relieve your beloved iPhone from AT&T’s struggling network.

Hardware Unlock Vs. Software Unlock

Technically, there are 2 ways to go about unlocking your iPhone. There is a hardware unlock, which is invasive (you have to open the phone), that I don’t recommend that anyone tries unless they’ve got a pretty extensive background in some kind of electrical engineering.
The 2nd, much easier way, the software unlock, could be done on your lunch break by your 6th grader. Just like jailbreaking, this can be as easy as hooking your iPhone up to the computer and clicking ‘start’. However the requirements for unlocking and the rules you must follow are very different.

Things to Consider Before Unlocking

There are guidelines to follow when thinking about unlocking your iPhone.
First off you need to make sure that the carrier you are wishing to go to supports the iPhones technology. I’ll save everyone here stateside some time and just let the cat out of the bag. If you unlock, really your best option is T-Mobile, the other major wireless GSM carrier. Other, smaller CDMA carriers (any centennial wireless users out here??) have had users confirm the unlock to work, but chances are if your reading an article on unlocking, they are referring to T-Mobile (at least here in the states).
Secondly, you need to know your firmware version and modem firmware version (or baseband as its often referred to). This is easily discovered by popping into your iPhone settings and opening the ‘about’ window. Now if you can’t seem to find it, I’m scared for you, but I’m here for you, I’ve provided some pictures below to help you out.
These 2 things are important to know, as they determine whether you can unlock your iPhone or not. If you are even thinking of jailbreaking or unlocking, best practice is to stay away from updating your iTunes or iPhone software, as the war between the Dev Team and Apple rages on, each new update could disable or prevent future unlocks.
I always check http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ to see the latest unlock available. As you can see right now, they have one working for firmware version 3.1.3 and baseband 05.11, but if you have updated your iPhone recently and have the 05.12 baseband, you’re out of luck for the time being. An unlock is in the works but the ETA field is empty so, don’t hold your breath.
Finally if you meet the above requirements and are ready to unlock, you must first jailbreak. Now as you can see from all the hyperlinks in this article, I wrote an article on jailbreaking, and I know Sebastien’s got great tutorials in the blog’s ‘tutorials‘ section, so if you haven’t done that, check that stuff out, meet me back here in 5.

Who Comes Up With Unlocks?

The last part of our segment today on unlocking is software, pioneered by the great Dev Team and the prodigy kid from New Jersey GeoHot. GeoHot, who recently announced hacking the PS3, actually received media attention for his iPhone unlock and was given a new Nissan 350z by the co founder of Certicell, not bad eh.
But the backbone of the jailbreak/unlock community, the Dev Team, have been the steady frontrunners ever since. Their software QuickPwn, RedSn0w, and PwnageTool have been staples in the iPhone hacking community for years.
Generally when you’re using these programs to jailbreak they ask you if you’d like to unlock in one of the steps it takes you through. Here lately though, 1 task programs like UltraSnow have been relevant, also done by the Dev Team, also available in our downloads section.

Conclusion

Well that’s unlocking in 10 minutes or less, the key really is what version your firmware/modem firmware you’re running, and understanding there’s no unlock for 3.1.3 firmware if you have 05.12 modem firmware (baseband).
The model of your iPhone matters as well, whether it is the iPhone 3G , 3GS, or original version. Model compatibility for any unlock software is generally noted in the description of the download. And if I haven’t completely crushed your dreams yet, there’s no way to downgrade your baseband (let us know if you get Fuzzyband to work, we hear the bootloader’s to high). What am I talking about bootloaders, basebands, you guys should probably get out of here before things get really crazy.

Unlock Iphone 4

Unlocked-iPhone 4S
Unlocking is the removal of SIM restrictions on the modem, allowing the use of the iPhone on any carrier. The main reason to unlock your iPhone is if you want to use it with a different service provider (ie T-Mobile). Here are 2 articles you may want to look at:
There are two ways to unlock an iPhone. You can either do a software unlock, which usually requires some kind of hacking, or you can do a factory unlock.

Official Factory Unlock for iPhone

The difference between a locked iPhone and an officially unlocked one relies on the addition of the device’s IMEI number to a database of officially unlocked iPhones. The IMEI is like a fingerprint, completely unique to your device. When officially unlocked, your IMEI is officially recognized in Apple’s database as unlocked. There are now a few providers that have the ability to get iPhones permanently unlocked for a small fee.
To our knowledge, this is currently the best way to permanently unlock an iPhone, especially since there is no software unlocks available for the latest iOS versions.
The main benefits of a permanent IMEI unlock are:
  • it’s simple, and official (registered as officially unlocked in Apple’s database)
  • it works with any iPhone, even on-contract (iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus)
  • it’s 100% guaranteed to unlock your iPhone
  • the iPhone can’t be locked again, even if you update your device in iTunes
  • it does not void your iPhone warranty
  • no jailbreak or hacking required

Software Unlock

This page is a reference guide for anyone looking to unlock the iPhone using software. Simply look for your firmware version and your iPhone model, then click on the appropriate tutorial. Note that at this time, software unlocks only work with older iPhone models that haven’t been updated to the latest software. If you’re looking for a reliable, permanent unlock, we can only recommend you do a factory unlock of your device (see details above).
Software unlocks used to be available for older iPhones all the way to iPhone 4. Devices that have been released after the iPhone 4 cannot benefit from a software unlock.
